14 Benefits of Kangaroo Care It’s not a topic that most people like to discuss or consider, but there are many parents that have to face this very real issue – how to care for a child that is underweight from being premature or is just a slow weight gainer. Of course, you should always consult your child’s pediatrician for proper care. However, in addition to that, “kangaroo care” is a well-studied practice that provides clear benefits to premature and ill infants. The most practical method for providing “kangaroo care” is to use a baby sling or carrier. Some of the benefits of “kangaroo care” include the following:
- Normalizes temperature, heart rate, and respiratory functions.
- Breast milk is readily available and accessible. This allows for more frequent feedings, which leads to quicker development and strengthens the infant’s immune system.
- Maternal contact reduces the infant’s stress level. Children that are carried in baby slings are often calmer and soothed more readily.
- Reduced behavioral pain responses.
- Increased weight gain from more frequent feedings.
- Enhanced bonding between the parent and the infant. In addition to benefiting the child, mothers often enjoy this as well. The practice is also linked to a reduction in postpartum depression.
- Positive effects on the child’s mental development.
- Fewer infections.
- Better rest. The infant is more relaxed and more frequent feedings. Providing these basic needs often lead to better rest for your child.
- If hospitalized, earlier discharges.
- Possible reduced risk of sudden infant death.
- Normalized infant growth.
- Possible intervention for treating or soothing colic.
- Possible positive effects for motor development in small children and infants.
